While I was thinking about why blue gemstones are so beautiful, I read a fascinating book on interior design recently with a quiz in it on how to narrow down your own personal decorating style. One of the questions was, “If you had to live with only two colours for the rest of your life, what would they be?” Hmm, so hard! I love colour and spend a great deal of time admiring variations and shades but after considering the options, it struck me that I couldn’t pass up either blue or gold.
My love of blue goes way back. I think it started in my teenage years when I lived in Japan. There, I came across the Japanese tradition of indigo painting and dying. Indigo is the deep, mysterious, dark blue of a night sky. A rich navy blue infused with black. Sometimes it’s brighter and more like denim. I was so taken by the blues of antique hand-crafted indigo cloth and pottery that I collected as much as I could. My house is full of blue.
As for gold, I just love the old gold of burnished, bronze Buddhas found in the dappled/dark shadows of ancient wooden temples. (And gold goes so well with blue)
In jewellery, blue is truly captivating. It’s astounding to me that nature produces such breathtaking diversity in hue and intensity. From the richly opulent, Lapis Lazuli, to the sharp, clear, sparkling, sky blue of Swiss Blue Topaz and the fresh, iridescent/ocean green- blue of an exquisite piece of Turquoise. Not to mention the shimmering, cerulean blue of Spectrolite or the velvety, royal blue of a prized Sapphire. Wow!
A new collection of beautiful blue gemstones
I think blue gemstones are so beautiful. Blue is the central colour of our new earring collection for Ixtlan Melbourne and Paris Argentina. Paris and I were inspired by the lavish dance clubs of the 1920s. We wanted to create a modern take on earrings from this era while keeping the sumptuousness of art deco style. Our vision was a sleek, streamlined interpretation. Eye- catching, glamorous earrings you can wear either day or night.
So we designed long, drop earrings featuring an array of gorgeous blue gemstones. Lapis Lazuli with Swiss Blue Topaz and milky blue Rainbow Moonstone, Turquoise and Opals. Embellished with gleaming, classy silver or gold detail. Wearing these earrings, you can easily imagine that you’re about to catch up for a cocktail with Daisy from The Great Gatsby or go dancing later at the Palladium Dance Hall in New York.
I love the idea of incorporating a little dash of old-world elegance and excitement into our modern-day life!
